Tips for Common Dental Emergencies
Toothache: first, thoroughly rinse your mouth with warm water. Use dental floss to remove any lodged food. If your mouth is swollen, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek. Don’t put painkillers on the gums, it may burn the gum tissue. Call us immediately.
Knocked-out tooth: keep it moist at all times. If you can, try to put it back in the socket without touching the root. Otherwise, place it in between your cheek and gums, in milk, or use a tooth preservation product. Call us immediately.
Chipped or cracked tooth: immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area. Put cold compresses on the face to keep any swelling down. Save any pieces. Call us as soon as possible.
Lost crown: call us to make an appointment and bring the crown with you. If you can’t get to our office right away and the tooth is causing pain, use a cotton swab to apply a little clove oil to the sensitive area (it can be purchased at your local drug store). Leaving the tooth uncrowned can lead to further damage of the tooth.
